Glaucoma is an eye disease in which the optic nerve used to send vision information to the brain becomes damaged.  Often, the fluid pressure inside the eyes slowly rises, which can lead to faster optic nerve damage and possible blindness.

An ophthalmologist can detect glaucoma using one of several techniques.  Once detected, there are two main methods of treatment.

Medications

Medicines are the most common early treatment of glaucoma. They come in the form of eye drops and pills.

Laser Surgery (laser trabeculoplasty)

During this procedure, a high-energy beam of light is focused on the drain where the fluid leaves the eye. The laser makes several spots to stretch the drainage holes, allowing fluid to drain through them more easily.
