A retinal detachment occurs when the retina is pulled away from its normal position. The retina does not work when it is detached, and vision becomes blurred. A retinal detachment is a very serious problem that almost always causes blindness unless it is treated.

Retinal Tears

Most retinal tears need to be treated with laser surgery or cryotherapy, which seals the retina to the back wall of the eye.  These treatments cause little or no discomfort and may be performed in your ophthalmologist’s office. Treatment usually prevents retinal detachment.

Retinal Detachments

Almost all patients with retinal detachments require surgery to put the retina back in its proper position.

There are several ways to treat a retinal detachment. Your ophthalmologist will decide which type of surgery and anesthesia to use depending on the characteristics of your detachment.

"It was refreshing to see how well all of the doctors communicated with one another. I was pleased that my optometrist was there for me before and after my surgery. It seems seamless with Woolfson; from the reception, to the nurse, to my eye doctor, to the surgeon. I am happy they worked as a great team which makes me forever grateful for their skills and expertise."
