Dr. Anand
Shah, a native
of Georgia, is a fellowship-trained corneal and cataract surgery
specialist. Dr. Shah is a highly respected
ophthalmologist
who specializes in DSAEK and cataract surgery.
Dr. Shah
was the valedictorian of his high school class and then entered
the highly competitive, Combined Seven Year Accelerated Bachelor
of Arts/Medicine Program at Boston University. He graduated
summa cum laude from Boston University’s College of Arts and
Sciences with a major in medical sciences and a minor in archaeology.
Dr. Shah attended Boston University School of Medicine where
he not only graduated with honors and in the top 10% of his
class but was also invited into the highly prestigious Alpha
Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society.
After medical
school, Dr.
Shah completed a transitional internship at Wayne State University/Sinai
Grace Hospital in Detroit,
Michigan.
Following his internship, he completed his residency in ophthalmology
at the University of Colorado Health Sciences
Center in
Denver, Colorado where he published numerous articles on many
of the
ophthalmic
subspecialties along with presenting much of his work at international
ophthalmic meetings.
Following
his residency,
Dr. Shah was selected to pursue a Cornea and External Diseases
Fellowship at the prestigious
Devers Eye
Institute
in Portland, Oregon. There, under the guidance of Dr. Mark A.
Terry, a world-renowned
cornea surgeon
and a key
player in the advent of endothelial keratoplasty (EK), Dr. Shah
performed over 60 “partial cornea
transplants,”
or DSAEKs,
with a complication rate of <1%, a figure unmatched by 90% of currently practicing cornea surgeons in the
world. Also
during his
fellowship, Dr. Shah performed and assisted on multiple anterior
segment procedures and was involved in
the first
artificial
corneal transplant in the state of Oregon.
Dr. Shah
continues to publish extensively on groundbreaking surgical
techniques and outcomes in the field of EK in major ophthalmic
journals and has had the opportunity to present his group’s
research at multiple international ophthalmic meetings, including
the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) and American Society
of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ASCRS) Annual Meetings.
Dr. Shah is a member of the Association for Research in Vision
and Ophthalmology (ARVO) and the American Medical Association
(AMA).
He is excited
to return
to his native Georgia and is looking forward to welcoming new
patients to the practice. Dr. Shah
is also looking
forward to working with the high caliber of referring eye doctors
as they work together to ensure their
patients
with visual challenges benefit from his expertise in DSAEK and
cataract surgery.
In his free
time, Dr. Shah is an avid skier, world traveler, and a college
football fan that loves to watch his UGA Bulldogs!
